ASUKI

Drawing Artist/LIKE DRAWING BREATH Director

Biography

Born in Tokyo in 1973, ASUKI is a Japanese visual and performance artist who holds a degree in design from the Tokyo University of the Arts. Through his project LIKE DRAWING BREATH, he conducts multidisciplinary research at the intersection of drawing, performance, and collaborative creation. For ASUKI, drawing extends beyond the canvas: every bodily movement—walking, speaking, or looking—traces an invisible line in space.

By conceiving the environment as a flow of waves and consciousness, the artist translates these energies into vibrant lines to capture the present moment. Showcased in exhibitions and performances in Tokyo (such as RAIN and BREATH), his work is accompanied by participatory workshops that invite everyone to transform the artistic gesture into an act of conscious breathing.

Statement

It's all a world of drawing. Walking, talking, blinking, crossing legs, hands moving, opening doors. Sometimes graceful, sometimes distorted, the body is constantly drawing, and imagination traverses time and space, drawing. I want to live constantly aware of this. I want to draw the moment. As I place my right hand on the doorknob in front of me and turn it, my consciousness imagines turning it completely just a fraction of a second ahead. This signifies that I am perfectly accompanying the ever-changing flow of reality generation, and that I am participating in the creation of the world. The world is something I create myself. That is now. Drawing is a practice to remember this. Lines are born from my hands moment by moment. I observe them, and then create and observe again. Creation and observation happen simultaneously. Land, nature, and man-made objects also emit conscious information. The universe itself is a consciousness, and within it, the results of co-creation between me and others are constantly being born, disappearing, and being reborn. I perceive too much information from space. I cannot help but draw lines. I perceive lines in space. In nature, in cities, in the hustle and bustle of people. Those wills, emotions, and the countless waves of consciousness that remain even after subtracting them. My works are manifestations of this act, painted on canvases floating in space. They are a visualization of the diverse emotional waves emanating from the environment, and simultaneously, waves of emotion arising from within myself, an expression of the act of co-creating the next scene together with the world. The present reality is becoming thinner than before. This accelerates my urge to draw creative lines within it.
